Ken Herman’s column on self-driving vehicles (Austin American-Statesman, 9/29/17) points out the Drive A Senior Network as one of the few alternatives currently available to seniors who need help getting around town now that they’ve quit driving.  “This past month, we have had calls every day from new clients wanting our services,” Terry Milman, president of Drive a Senior-West Austin, told Herman. “It is becoming extremely difficult to keep up with the needs of our ever-growing senior community.”

One of the more pressing needs is for more volunteer drivers. “We are taxing our volunteers heavily with this incredible increase in those needing our services and actually just hired a part-time volunteer recruiter last month to help get the word out,” Milman said.

The article offers a glimpse into the benefits this program provides — to drivers and riders alike.
