Our free rides help Helen Zmud help the library

By |2018-08-25T19:47:31+00:00August 25th, 2018|press|0 Comments

At age 96 Drive a Senior passenger Helen Zmud likes to stay busy. And she does. For the past 10 years, she’s volunteered at the Westlake Public Library where she helps the staff process new books and audiobooks. Since she no longer drives, Southwest Region board chairman Bill O’Brien ferries her to and from her volunteer shifts as part of Drive a Senior’s program, which helps seniors get to doctor’s appointments, bridge clubs, grocery shopping and more.

Congratulations to Helen for her volunteer efforts. We’re happy we can help.

By |2018-03-07T00:26:17+00:00March 6th, 2018|press, Uncategorized|0 Comments

Amplify Austin, the annual one-day celebration of donation for Central Texas, raised $48,644.17 for the Drive a Senior Network this year. Two hundred seventy individual donors contributed to the 2018 effort.

At the end of the day, Drive a Senior was:

  • the second-highest recipient among small non-profit participants;
  • ranked 32 among a total of 702 participating non-profits;
  • raised the most money between 11 a.m. and noon on Friday, garnering a bonus of $1,000 from Amplify sponsor BB&T Bank.

Last year Drive a Senior provided 36,000 rides to more than 2500 of our senior neighbors. The funds we receive from Amplify will help us serve even more of the seniors in our Central Texas communities and increase the the number of rides we provide.

All told, Amplify Austin raised more than $10 million dollars in just 24 hours of concentrated giving.

Kerri Oswald receives ‘Legend Award’ from RecognizeGood

By |2017-11-17T15:49:02+00:00November 17th, 2017|press|0 Comments

RecognizeGood has honored Kerri Oswald with its 70th “Legend Award” for her tireless commitment to seniors in our community. The Legend award carries with it a $1,000 pay-it-forward donation in Kerri’s name to the nonprofit of her choice. She chose Drive a Senior – Southwest.

Kerri’s volunteer journey began in 2003 when she signed on with AGE of Central Texas to help adults with early memory loss through the Memory Connections program. For the past 14 years she has spent every Friday morning engaging her charges in cognitive activities, such as creative writing, music therapy and current-events discussions. She found that many of her seniors were struggling to find adequate transportation to medical, shopping and social appointments. So she researched the problem and soon became a founding director of Drive A Senior – Southwest. The Drive A Senior Network has five regions in Central Texas that offer free rides to seniors who choose to stay in their own homes after they give up driving themselves. Kerri has personally logged more than 3,200 hours of “road work” for seniors enrolled in the program

In addition to the pay-it-forward donation, Kerri’s “Legend” status means she’ll be part of the “Say Thanks Austin” campaign in January, 2018. “Say Thanks” allows Central Texans to honor a handful of truly remarkable individuals who give freely of their time and talents to improve our community. The participant with the most Thank You votes receives a $10,000 donation to his or her favorite nonprofit.

RecognizeGood is a local nonprofit that provides a means for individuals, businesses and other nonprofits to illuminate selfless volunteers, charitable acts and community service throughout the greater Austin area. There are several active RecognizeGood programs that work toward this mission from different angles, but the common theme is simple – the illumination of GOOD in our community.
